In order to be spared of the death penalty, Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., 74, accused of being the “Golden State Killer,” has pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder, among other charges, and will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole....
Due to social distance and the fact that the audience includes 150 Golden State Killer victims and families, DeAngelo’s hearing is being held at a Sacramento State University ballroom. DeAngelo has spoken only to admit guilt and can be seen wearing a face shield and an orange jumpsuit, as picturedHe is expected to plead guilty to all the charges, which have been consolidated from prosecutors in Sacramento, Contra Costa, Orange, Santa Barbara, Tulare and Ventura counties—the counties where he allegedly committed the crimes.
At DeAngelo’s sentencing, scheduled for August, victims and families are expected to read impact statements and confront DeAngelo.100-plus. This is the number of home robberies the Golden State Killer is accused of committing in 1974, the suspected start of his violent spree.
