Tony Abbott has revealed what Australia should be doing in the region to deter an increasingly hostile Beijing, adding any attempt for it to seize Taiwan would be a “complete catastrophe”.
Beijing has become increasingly hostile in the Pacific, particularly when it comes to the self-governing island of Taiwan.
The frank assessment from the former prime minister comes after the release of the Defence Strategic Review, which found Australia’s current military posture is currently “not fit for purpose”.During an interview with Sky News Australia, Mr Abbott described The Quad as the most important strategic developments in our world since the creation of NATO.
Mr Abbott said that deterrence across the Taiwan Strait is critical as China continues to exert its dominance in the Pacific.“If it was unresisted it would change the world order, if it was resisted it raises the stakes absolutely astronomically. It comes after China held three days of military exercises around Taiwan which included the creation of a temporary"blockade" of the island and simulated precision missile strikes.
Australian Strategic Policy Institute Senior Analyst Malcolm Davis says the new Defence Strategic Review is a âstep in the right directionâ but will probably need to be updated as the âthreat environment changes.â
