I FAILED to catch my stiff deadline last Tuesday, so the promised article on 'statecraft' and the South China Sea dispute was unceremoniously bumped off by my editor to make way for more punctual stuff. The missed deadline was probably fortuitous because, in my disappointment, I got keener in my sleuthing on the roots of the SCS disputes.
That said, China is unique: It backs its maritime claims with formidable naval, law enforcement, and maritime militia fleets.
