Labor MP Marion Scrymgour says the violence against Aboriginal women in Central Australia is “appalling”, and they “need to be given a voice” amid the upcoming Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum.

“It’s a national shame, and we shouldn’t be looking at women subjected to the levels of violence that we’ve seen here, in Alice Springs,” Ms Scrymgour told Sky News Australia.

“We are still not seeing the female representation at an equal level on land councils that we should be. “Women play an important role in terms of the culture and the wellbeing of communities – it is time for people to recognise that.”
