, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder just 10 days before Dean killed Jefferson. Guyger was off-duty but still in uniform when she walked into the apartment of Botham Jean, a Black accountant, and shot him. Guyger testified she mistakenly thought Jean was an intruder in her apartment, when she had actually entered the wrong apartment.

Mike Snipes, a retired judge and former state and federal prosecutor who tried the Dallas County murder case against Roy Oliver, emphasized that every trial is different. Snipes, who is white, said Dallas County prosecutors called more than 20 witnesses in Oliver’s 2018 trial. A retired FBI agent and expert on police use of force testified Oliver’s shooting was not justified.

Dean has been expressive throughout the trial. He wiped his face with tissues during emotional parts of testimony from Jefferson’s nephew, now 11, and her sister. Dean also turned his back to a projector when photos of Jefferson’s lifeless body on her bedroom floor were shown to jurors.One of the central issues for jurors is whether Dean saw Jefferson’s gun before he pulled the trigger.

Zion Carr, Jefferson’s nephew, told a child forensic interviewer the morning of the shooting that Jefferson pointed a gun toward the window. ButZion also told the forensic interviewer he heard someone yell outside the window and thought he saw a police badge. But on the stand, Zion insisted he didn’t hear or see anything outside. Defense lawyers later implied to the judge they believe Zion was coached to give a different account of the shooting.
