The newest generation of technology coming online in Norway and elsewhere should enable the industry to farm fish in ways that are more efficient, sustainable and environmentally responsible paid ABBNorthAmerica
The deep-water salmon farm, and the high-tech systems that control it, are part of a strategy that its operators hope will enable them to meet the accelerating demand for high-quality seafood—while improving safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability.
But fish growing in pens can attract pathogens and parasites. At Norway’s more than 500 salmon farms, which produce about half of the 2.4 million tons of salmon that is farm-harvested annually, sea lice infestations are common: The skin parasite costs the industry an estimated $600 million each year.
and global technology leader ABB for help building the first remote-controlled submersible offshore salmon farm. The deep-water farm, in the Arctic Ocean offshore of the far-north city of Troms, consists of semi-submersible cages that can hold 3,000 tons of fish and withstand 42-foot waves. ABB designed a system to control the pontoon ballast water systems that are critical to keeping the pens stable in rough seas.
Locating the farm offshore should reduce its environmental footprint—and provide a healthier environment for the fish. Toward monitoring and gathering data on fish health, size and other factors, the project will incorporate a new automated camera system that has already been tested at fjord-based salmon farms, where workers have traditionally hand-checked fish for lice and weight.
