MIRI: Sarawak is 'politically independent' has learnt from its past association with Barisan Nasional, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg.

Sarawak is"politically independent" has learnt from its past association with Barisan Nasional, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg .Johari said Sarawak wanted to maintain good ties with Putrajaya but be politically autonomous.

He said that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak state government considered itself autonomous but friendly to Pakatan Harapan in Putrajaya.Earlier Sunday, he held a gathering with Miri GPS component parties – Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu , Sarawak United Peoples Party , Parti Rakyat Sarawak and Progressive Democratic Party .GPS parties were formerly aligned with Barisan Nasional.

Johari, who is GPS chairman, said that Sarawak parties opted out of Barisan after GE14 due to the changed political landscape. "For so long, we in Sarawak were controlled by Barisan in Putrajaya … even when making policies and decisions."We will work closely with Putrajaya but we in GPS and Sarawak are already politically independent," he said.

Johari said he had spoken to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the need for the state government to work closely with Pakatan at the national level."We still need basic amenities like water supply, electricity and rural roads, which require a lot of money," he said.Related News
