Bowerman Track Club pro runner spmcgorty12 still doesn’t know what caused the foot infection.
. It was a 10-second PR for the 25-year-old Virginia native—proof that, at long last, he is entering the realm of world-class.
An MRI scan showed some bone stress in his heel but his symptoms worsened in the days after. “I’d have hot flashes where I was sweating an insane amount and I couldn’t have a shoe on. The throbbing was unbearable.”Elise Cranny—a fellow elite distance runner with BTC and his girlfriend—drove McGorty to the emergency room of Park City Hospital, where he learned his foot was infected.
On July 1, surgeons made an incision along the outside of his right heel and cleaned out the infection, placing antibiotic beads into the area. In the aftermath, McGorty worked with physical therapist Colleen Little in Portland to regain mobility in his ankle. In August, McGorty got back to jogging, but within weeks, the pain and swelling returned.
His altitude training camp in Colorado Springs in January was “trial by fire,” with McGorty smashing hard workouts and hoping his body held up. His first race was impressive–a 3:57.19 mile in Seattle–but as the season went on he overcooked the intensity and was “fried” by late February. “The dark and hard moments with running can teach you a lot about yourself,” he says. “When you have it taken away, you really see how much it means. I’m incredibly fortunate this is what I get to do with my life.”
