As a 24-year-old newlywed, Sampson and his wife, Karen, rented a U-Haul and left Pembroke, N.C., for East Lansing, Mich., where he began as an assistant coach at Michigan State. By the next summer, the Sampsons were on the way to what might as well been the other side of the world, Butte, Mont., a mining town located in the northern Rocky Mountains, where he was an assistant for one season at Montana Tech and a 25-year-old, first-time head coach by the next.
It was fitting after Monday’s 47-point win that Sampson stood near midcourt, serenaded by applause from an adoring crowd of 7,042, with Karen by his side. She’s been there for every win.There was No. 100 against Pacific in 1989 as coach at Washington State. His 200was with UH, a win over SMU in 2019.
There was Hollis Price, an All-America guard for Sampson’s best teams at Oklahoma and assistant coach on the UH staff, who has been around for 309 victories.“Truly incredible feat for an all-time great coach, but an even better leader and even better person” said Wes VanBeck, a guard for UH from 2014-18.
