Just as COVID and flu numbers are easing, human metapneumovirus is on the rise. What is it and how does it affect you?
It is a virus you have never heard of, and it is rampaging across NSW in big numbers. It is very likely you have had it before.
A spokesperson for NSW Health said testing for hMPV was sometimes not performed if a sample was positive for COVID or influenza. As a result case numbers were “likely to be under-estimated”. There is no medicinal treatment for hPMV. Antivirals do not work, and there are no vaccines available, although Moderna is working on that. Its hPMV vaccine, an mNRA-type, has just passed a phase one trial.
University of Sydney Virologist Dr John-Sebastian Eden said hMPV was the “forgotten cousin” of RSV and was “underappreciated” for how serious it could be.
