At the first Republican presidential debate of the 2024 campaign, Donald Trump was nowhere to be found. The frontrunner for the nomination was instead hosting a rival event on Twitter.
Trump went on to criticise multiple networks before returning to Fox News, telling Carlson: "I think it was a terrible move getting rid of you."in circumstances that have never been completely explained.
One was when he asked Trump if he was worried about being murdered by his political enemies, suggesting it was the "next stage" after indictment."It started with protests against you … and then it moved to impeachment, twice, and now indictment," Carlson put to Trump. Later, Carlson asked the question again, but Trump didn't answer it and instead responded by criticising the decisions to indict him.'Were going to take a moment to talk about the elephant not in the room'But two men were singled out for boos and jeers: the former governor of New Jersey Chris Christie and the former governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson.
Halfway through the debate, the hosts asked the candidates who would support Trump if he won the primary by a show of hands. All candidates have signed a pledge to support the nominee no matter what, but Hutchinson and Christie refused to raise their hands on stage. Trump's attacks on Biden were characteristically personal, and included false claims the president couldn't walk to his beach chair or lift it off the sand.
