Attackers want to pressure Nvidia into making it easier to mine cryptocurrency using its popular graphics card.

The past few years have seen so many cases of ransomware and online extortion that it’s pretty rare to see an attacker deviate from the standard template: demand a cryptocurrency payment in exchange for decrypting a victim’s systems or not leaking their stolen data.

Nvidia has been at the center of that conflict as one of a very small number of tech manufacturers in a position to make cryptocurrency mining more difficult and thereby potentially reduce some of the energy costs and illegal uses.
