She 'inspired animal lovers and romantics at the Palace of Fine Arts for nearly three decades.'

The Palace of Fine Arts has been graced by the presence of swans since it first opened during the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition. Blanche was born at the San Francisco landmark on May 5, 1994, and spent her early days on the water with her mother, Friday, her father, Stella, her brother Mortimer, and her sisters, Knuckles and Monday II. But their idyllic lives soon took a tragic turn.

After Mortimer mated with Knuckles, he became territorial once their cygnets hatched, and in 2001, he attacked his mother and killed his father. In early 2010, Friday was stolen; he was found six months later at a private residence in the avenues. She was subsequently re-homed. That same year, a still-unidentified individual killed Monday by snapping her neck, leaving Blanche to fend for herself.

But in 2011, she was introduced to her then-7-year-old companion, another mute swan named Blue Boy. Together, they reared multiple cygnets and were rarely seen apart, though many of their babies were relocated from the Palace of Fine Arts when their father became a bit too territorial during mating season, and at least one, named Marge, likely became the victim of a hawk or snapping turtle in 2014.
