A Sydney mayor wants to sink a navy ship four kilometres off Coogee Beach to create an artificial reef for scuba divers, but he's facing opposition from councillors who are concerned about the cost and the impact on marine life
A Sydney mayor wants to sink a navy ship four kilometres off Coogee Beach to create an artificial reef for scuba divers, but is facing a revolt by councillors concerned about the cost and impact on marine life.
Pandolfini said there had been no research on the environmental impact of the proposal, but “the stories of past issues with navy ships being sunk aren’t exactly encouraging”. A plan to sink ex-HMAS Sydney for a dive site was scuttled in 2017 after the state government decided the project was too expensive. The missile frigate was sent to Western Australia to be scrapped instead. The diving club’s founder John Rowe said the state government should foot the bill to create a Sydney dive wreck given it would attract tourists and provide an economic return far exceeding the forecast cost of creating an artificial reef.
Parker’s mayoral minute said the artificial reef would be built by acquiring an ex-navy ship, stripping and cleaning it to remove unwanted components and sinking it at a site four kilometres off Coogee.
