He was born in San Antonio and grew up on Marbach Road on the West Side. Before he died, he told the chaplain at the hospital that growing up in that neighborhood had shaped him. He received a double lung transplant in October 2020 at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Lung transplants have high rates of rejection, infection and higher mortality rates than other types of transplants. Doctors said the procedure would likely buy him seven or 10 years of life.“This would have given him a little extra time with his girls, so he took it,” Armstrong said. “Anything is better than nothing.
