A Pep talk seals deal for new Texans tight ends coach Tim Berbenich

In his most recent gig before joining the Texans, Tim Berbenich was an offensive quality control and running backs coach for the Raiders.Long before Tim Berbenich became the Texans’ new tight ends coach, he was pretty much a chauffeur.

Remember the tight ends in that lineage? Russ Francis in San Francisco? Maybe lesser so Billy Miller at USC, although he’d later score the first touchdown in Texans history? They were part of Berbenich’s early lessons from Hackett, the teachings about the foundations of an offensive system and the positions that make the system sing.

This time, in joining a Texans team entering the second year of a massive rebuild, Berbenich said “the pitch here was Pep.” He’s one of three new Texans assistant coaches — joining assistant offensive line coach Hal Hunter and offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach Ted White — who have previously worked with Hamilton, now the Texans’ OC.

Hamilton’s history includes a “tight-end driven offense for sure,” Berbenich said — a “run-first kind of operation” that should satisfy new Texans coach Lovie Smith’s desire to produce the physical style of play the franchise failed to field last season under former coach David Culley and offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.
