In a separate lawsuit, the company also claimed that Luttrell’s order to mount a more aggressive response to the spill was rash. It came a day after The Washington Post revealed an expert analysis that contradicted Taylor Energy’s claims that almost no oil was present at the site. The large amount of oil “was no surprise at all,” Couvillion said, considering the length of the sheen on the gulf’s surface at the site and an acute smell.
During proceedings at the federal court in New Orleans where Taylor Energy’s case is being heard, U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle asked pointed questions to both the Coast Guard and Taylor Energy about why the cleanup is taking so long. Lemelle addressed Rosenblum directly. “Look, you tried,” he said. “But it’s still going on after all this time. Let’s get someone else to look at this.”
