Hyundai's stylish electric box is about to get the N high-performance treatment.
Amid all the hoopla surrounding its two new N-brand performance concepts, Hyundai also quietly announced the coming of its first production all-electric N vehicle,, which will go on sale in 2023 alongside its more pedestrian, non-N Ioniq 5 sibling that was introduced for 2022.
Hyundai's N performance sub-brand has been promising for a few years now its cars will go electric, and the Ioniq 5 N is leading the charge. The company isn't providing any more details than that, but we can make a few educated guesses. A great indicator for the Ioniq 5 N is the RN22e concept revealed today. Based on the Ioniq 6, the RN22e concept is effectively a preview of the upcoming Ioniq 6 N. This is important because the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and RN22e all share the same E-GMP electric vehicle platform. That means any performance upgrades made to the RN22e are applicable to the Ioniq 5 for N duty.
As with those other N cars and the RN22e concept, we expect the Ioniq 5 N to features major handling upgrades such as adjustable dampers, stiffer springs, and potentially a limited-slip differential on the rear axle. A brake upgrade is also in order to handle repeated hard stops with all that battery weight on board. The RN22e concept features 15.7-inch front brakes clamped by four-piston calipers.
