Near-infrared images of Jupiter's fourth-largest moon taken by the James Webb Space Telescope suggest carbon, a key element for life, can be found in Europa's subsurface ocean.
abc.net.au/news/nasa-jwst-spots-carbon-europa-subsurface-ocean/102889478Lurking beneath the icy shell of Jupiter's moon Europa is a vast, salty ocean that has long intrigued scientists.Europa, one of the largest moons of Jupiter, is believed to have a deep subsurface oceanFuture missions will attempt to determine if the moon could harbour life.Unfortunately for planetary scientists, it's difficult to see through the planet's exterior to probe the ocean's chemistry.
And with the arrival of the James Webb Space Telescope , scientists' ability to examine the surface has levelled up., published in the journal Science, used a technique called near-infrared spectroscopy to assess the concentration of carbon dioxide at Europa's surface and trace where it came from. Tara Regio has been dubbed "chaos terrain", because it's an area that seems to have been geologically active in the past.
JWST's Near Infrared Camera allowed scientists to pinpoint, with greater accuracy than ever before, where carbon dioxide on the surface of Europa was concentrated.
