A huge hike in New Jersey’s health care costs will sting workers and taxpayers | Opinion

It turns out the governor’s election-year mantra of, “no new taxes,” really just meant, “no new taxes that you can tie directly to my name.”

When local mayors and school boards pass budgets next year with property tax increases, the townspeople will wave their fists and point their ire toward their governing body. No matter how much our local officials explain that their hands were tied with astronomical state health care increases, it won’t make much of a difference to the people just trying to keep a roof over their heads.

When the state’s decisions directly impact local property taxpayers, do those people really care who they’re paying more money to? At the end of the day, a bill is a bill, and because of this administration’s poor handling of the state health care plan, most New Jersey residents will be paying a higher bill.

Assemblyman Brandon Umba represents the 8th Legislative District, which includes parts of Atlantic, Burlington and Camden counties.
