There's a subtle but ingenious trick the filmmakers behind I Am Legend employed that makes the movie that much creepier. I Am Legend was the third adaptation of the classic Richard Matheson novel, though the book had inspired everything from Night Of The Living Dead to Salem's Lot. Several other actors circled I Am Legend before Will Smith signed on, with even Arnold Schwarzenegger once set to play the lead in the late '90s.

There's something deeply unsettlingly about seeing a city that never stops moving be so still and empty. This further encouraged director Francis Lawrence to strip back on dialogue and score, to further enhance the eerieness of I Am Legend's abandoned New York.
Why The I Am Legend Mannequin Scene Is So Scary It should be noted that Fred being moved is what gets Neville to investigate, but he hallucinates the head moving on his own. This is the start of one I Am Legend's best sequences, as Fred was placed there to lure Neville into a Darkseeker trap. The real purpose of this moment is to highlight that the Darkseekers are intelligent and know enough about Neville's habits to lure him into a trap like the kind he designs to capture them.
This was intended to set up the original ending of I Am Legend, where Neville learns the Darkseekers are not only intelligent, but they're starting their own society. Sadly, this subplot was largely removed from the final movie, though the mannequin ambush remains as the biggest hint towards it. It also highlights Neville's loosening grasp on reality, and with just a tilt of a head, Fred gave I Am Legend its most sinister shot.
