The family thought they were just helping throw away trash. Then, they realized they had a 'cash vault.'

A Virginia family is being praised by police after they stopped to pick up what appeared to be two bags of trash only to discover the bags held nearly $1 million in cash.

The Schantz family went out for a drive on Saturday to escape the monotony brought on by COVID-19, according to Major C. Scott Moser of the Carolina County Sheriff's Office. A car in front of them swerved out of the way of what looked like a bag of trash, but the Schantz family accidentally ran it over.

"Instead of just leaving the trash on the road, they stopped the truck, got out, picked the trash up, threw it in the back of the truck," Moser said. They soon saw another bag of trash lying in a ditch nearby and grabbed that one, too, Moser said. When they finished their drive, they went to throw the big, white bags away but noticed they looked like they contained mail."Inside of the bag, there were plastic baggies and they were addressed with something that said 'cash vault,'" Emily Schantz told
