From Yorkton to Prince Albert, cities across the province fly unique flags that often go unnoticed.

“There tons of flags around but you don’t often notice,” says Judy Denham, owner and manager of The Flag Shop in Saskatoon.Denham opened her shop in 1999 and provides flags for the City of Saskatoon and City of Moose Jaw and has also produced flags for Estevan and Weyburn. She says it’s been a great way to learn about communities around Saskatchewan.

The City of Saskatoon flag was loosely modelled after the American national flag with 13 horizontal bars. The province’s largest city also has the most off-the-wall flag. As in, the design was literally taken off a wall. “So, the mayor gets on the horn to the utilities manager, the utilities manager heads down to the bus barns, he finds this painting, takes it off the wall and brings it back to city hall and they made flag out of it,” O’Brien says.

Atkinson also redesigned Saskatoon’s civic crest and coat of arms in 1948, replacing a previous version from 1913. Four green triangles representing the fishing, farming, forestry and fur industries form a stylized tree, arrowhead and arrow pointing north in the Prince Albert city flag. The green and gold on Prince Albert’s flag represent the agricultural and forestry landscapes of the region.

Before that, the city had an unofficial flag in use since 1968 featuring a purple field and a bright gold circle containing a stylized crown described in a June 10, 1992 column by the Leader-Post’s Ron Petrie as “the spitting image of an overturned patio table.” “It was recognizing Canada’s place in the commonwealth, the end of Empire and growth of a multicultural and pluralistic community in Regina and Canada,” she explains.

But before using a crown in its heraldry, even the Queen City has to get permission from the actual queen. Fortunately, Her Majesty obliged, leading to the Regina city flag we see today.Article content
