Brazoria County sheriff fires deputy who was arrested on public intoxication charge in Uvalde

A makeshift memorial is seen Tuesday, May 31, 2022 in the town square of Uvalde, Texas for the 19 children and two adults killed at Robb Elementary School May 24, 2022 by an 18-year-old gunman with an assault rifle.

The deputy became so intoxicated at his temporary living quarters that he was"a danger to himself and others" and displayed erratic behavior, according to the agency. He was off-duty at the time of the incident. Lofton was immediately removed from the assignment and the sheriff's office launched an investigation. An internal affairs investigation found that he violated multiple department policies. He has been relieved of duty and is no longer employed at the sheriff's office, the agency said.

"The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office is committed to holding our employees to the high standards our community demands and expects from their Sheriff's Office," the agency said in a statement."The actions of Deputy Lofton were not consistent with this department's mission and should not minimize the outstanding work other good men and women have done and continue to do for the grieving community of Uvalde Texas.

In response to a statewide call for assistance, the sheriff's office sent eight patrol deputies and two dispatchers to Uvalde a week after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in which 19 children and two teachers died.
