The United States Coast Guard was deployed after a 100-gallon oil spill in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
Philadelphia Fire Department Communications Director Rachel Cunningham told the Washington Examiner that 100 gallons of diesel fuel from a pump house leaked due to a faulty pump. The PFD's hazmat unit was called to assist the Navy Yard's fire service with the spill at 9:27 a.m. and declared the situation under control at 9:38 a.m.The Coast Guard and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection were also called to assist with the leak.
A helicopter from 6 ABC Action News recorded footage of the spill, which leaked across the waterway and around several mothballed ships.For comparison, the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010 released 205.8 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. The Philadelphia Navy Yard is the oldest in the United States and contains more ships than many countries' entire navies. Of the 49 inactive ships in the U.S., 31 are located in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
