COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's Health Ministry announced on Wednesday (Jan 1) that dengue cases in the country had doubled in 2019, when compared to the previous year, with 90 deaths reported and over 99,000 cases reported nationwide.
The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, quoted in local media reports said November saw the most number of cases with more than 21,000 infected patients.
With continuous rains in the country, the Epidemiology Unit has alerted residents from five high-risk districts which include Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, in the western province, Ratnapura in the south central province and Galle in the south. "All fever patients need rest and should refrain from attending work or school," said epidemiologists, adding that Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever can be fatal.
