From shapes to colors, here’s how Star Wars’ lightsabers have changed since the original trilogy thanks to Legends, prequels, and Disney canon.
Few things visually define Star Wars as much as lightsabers, but the “laser swords” have changed a lot since the original trilogy. From Obi-Wan’s conversation about the past with Luke in the original Star Wars to Rey’s yellow lightsaber at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the kyber crystal-powered blades have received new colors, different shapes, and multiple lore implications. Between Legends and the Disney canon, lightsabers have their own, longer chapter in Star Wars history.
Though the Expanded Universe had already added new lightsaber colors to the Star Wars universe, the importance of Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber to the “Lucas canon” should not be overlooked. When it came to the movies, blue, green, and red were all there were in terms of lightsaber colors. Lucas was not a fan of adding multiple lightsaber colors, but the director ended up answering Samuel L.
When The Phantom Menace brought Star Wars back to the big screen 22 years after the original film, visual effects were much simpler. Given that the lightsaber effect could be added entirely in post-production, there was no need for poles, reflective tapes, or anything that tried to create some sort of practical effect. The lightsaber stunts could be done with lightsaber props, making it all much easier.
