From their inceptions to their endings, here’s how Disney’s Star Wars’ New Republic differs from the Expanded Universe's take on a post-Empire galaxy.
Star Wars’ New Republic exists in both the Expanded Universe and the Disney canon, yet there are several differences between the two versions. After Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced and destroyed the New Republic in the same film, it was up to other Star Wars media to expand on this important new concept.
In the Expanded Universe, it was only after the liberation of Coruscant from the remaining Imperial forces that the New Republic found its capital. In Disney’s Star Wars canon, however, Coruscant was never the New Republic’s capital. While Coruscant was an obviously important planet in the galaxy’s political background, the New Republic wanted to distance itself from Imperial practices, and from the past as a whole.
Disney’s New Republic, however, was never attached to a new Jedi Order. That said, Luke did follow Yoda’s lesson from Return of the Jedi and tried to pass down what he had learned. The first Disney Star Wars canon mention of a Luke Skywalker Jedi Order happened in The Force Awakens, when Han Solo recalled how one of Luke’s students turned against him and destroyed the school.
