A dead humpback whale is pulled to the beach off of 19th street in Sea Isle City, Friday, Sept. 16, 2016. It is one of more than 200 that have washed up on the Atlantic Coast since 2016, , according to a federal tally. The tragic and recurring trend of large whales washing up on the Atlantic Coast has not stopped.

In the meantime, officials hope new federal money will help to surveil and protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale and benefit other ocean species in the process. Right whales in the North Atlantic number fewer than 350 individual animals — including fewer than 70 reproductively active females according to federal scientists. And although just two of the 63 whales to wash up on the Atlantic Coast since January were right whales, officials hope the new allocation will have implications for humpback whales, common bottlenose dolphins and other species that have suffered from issues like vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglement.
