Christmas Day floods have left eight people dead, three injured, 19 others missing, and forced the evacuation of over 100,000 people from their homes in six regions across Visayas and Mindanao, civil defense officials said Monday.Rescuers use a wooden banca to traverse the flooded streets of Oroquieta City on Monday.The Office of Civil Defense said the initial estimated damage to agriculture stood at over P59 million, mostly in Region 5 or Bicol, where the flood destroyed irrigation and plants.
“The waters rose above the chest in some areas, but today the rains have ceased,” civil defense worker Robinson Lacre said from Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental, which accounted for 33,000 of the 45,700 people evacuated from their homes. Seven deaths – mostly from drowning – were reported in Clarin and the nearby southern towns of Jimenez and Tudela in Misamis Occidental.
Some 23 fishermen aboard two boats that capsized when hit by big waves off the southern city of Zamboanga were also rescued on Sunday.According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, around 15,487 families or 69,323 individuals in 98 barangays were affected by the massive flooding due to heavy rainfall caused by the shear line.
