“You don’t deserve to be alive. You should kill yourself.” On a Wednesday night, after a long day of covering a violent anti-war protest where metal projectiles were hurled at police, that email landed in my inbox. I don’t know the person who sent it and can only assume they’re part of the violent group at the protest as they also called me a “mouthpiece for violent parasites and autocrats”. I’ve had enough and I’m calling it out.
My colleague, Sunrise reporter Teegan Dolling, wrote about a bottle being thrown at her and her cameraman. 7NEWS reporter Paul Dowsley shared some vile messages he had received to his Instagram inbox after covering the same protest. “Go make friends with the barrel of a gun c***,” was one of them. He was also called a “piece of crap”, “liar,” “scumbag” and “a disgrace”.
