A week-long road safety operation in Johor, Malaysia, has resulted in 706 summonses being issued for various traffic violations. Authorities report that compliance with road safety regulations remains low despite the operation.
JOHOR BARU: A week-long road safety operation since Christmas has issued 706 summonses for various violations, while authorities say compliance “remains low.” Johor Road Transport Department director Azmil Zainal Adnan said that the operation was conducted under “Ops Khas Gempur Teknikal” to boost compliance with road safety regulations and reduce accidents and fatalities.
The operation focuses on monitoring and evaluating adherence to safety regulations for commercial vehicles under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (Act 715), and associated regulations. The operation was conducted between Dec 25 and Jan 1, where the agency inspected a total of 3,480 commercial vehicles. Of these, 428 vehicles faced penalties, five vehicles were seized, and 706 summonses were issued for various offences, he said in a statement here on Wednesday (Jan 1). He added that the offences included overloading, lack of insurance, exhaust modifications, poor tyre maintenance or excessive wear, vehicle modifications, and tinted windows. Violations included 13% of cases involving overloading (90 cases), 11% related to the absence of vocational licenses (73 cases), and 6% about technical offences (93 cases), he said. He added that the department takes a firm stance against vehicle owners and drivers who continue to violate traffic laws. “Continuous enforcement and stringent action will be maintained to foster a safer road safety culture for all road users,” he said
