No. 3 Houston opens season with rout of Northern Colorado to give Kelvin Sampson 700th career win
Marcus Sasser scored 21 points as No. 3 University of Houston opened the season with a 83-36 victory over Northern Colorado on Monday night to deliver coach Kelvin Sampson’s his 700J’Wan Roberts added 12 points and six rebounds and highly touted freshman forward Jarace Walker had a game-high 12 rebounds in his collegiate debut to offset a 3-of-14 shooting performance. Walker started the game and played 28 minutes.
After missing his first three shots, Sasser, a preseason All-America guard, made seven of his last 11 shots, including four 3-pointers. Sasser made his return after he missed the entire second half of last season with a toe injury. Emmanuel Sharp had 11 points, including three 3-pointers, Jamal Shead added nine points and nine assists and freshman Terrance Arceneaux had seven points.
Northern Colorado, a member of the Big Sky, went nearly scoreless for nearly six minutes to end the first half and begin the second half. Riley Abercrombie, Matt Johnson II and Caleb Shaw each had eight points for Northern Colorado, which shot 25.6 percent for the game.
