Here's what you need to know if you're headed down to the beach for MemorialDay weekend. 🚘🏖️

weekend is expected to be one of the busiest in years, and chances are a lot of folks are driving to Alabama’s beaches.A whopping 92% of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach visitors during the summers of 2018 and 2019 arrived by carThe Alabama Department of Transportation is alerting motorists to be mindful of increased traffic and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

There will be no temporary lane closures on Alabama interstates or state routes for any construction-related activity from noon on Friday, May 26 to Monday, 29 at midnight. The East Canal road widening project, including the roundabout, has been underway since September 2022. The 1.4-mile stretch of Canal Road is being expanded to three lanes, inclduing a middle turn lane. The roundabout is near the Orange Beach public library, and will serve as a “U-turn for traffic going to Doc’s Seafood & Steaks, GT’s Restaurant, and any property between on the north side of Canal Road.

Additional lanes will be added to I-10 from Mobile County Road 39 interchange west of Theodore to the County Road 69 overpass in Mobile. The contractor is H.O. Weaver and Sons, and the project will take place during the nighttime hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Sunday-Thursday. The project’s completion date is May 24, 2024.

The Route 59 project primarily consists of adding an additional southbound lane. The only improvements affecting northbound traffic will be median and turn lane work around Cotton Creek Drive north of the Gulf Shores International Airport. Acreman said that work will not start until the work south of the bridge is completed.: ALDOT is administering a couple of projects on I-65 in South Alabama.

Resurfacing and other upgrades will occurring the highway from D’Olive Creek Bridge in Daphne south to Alabama State Route 104 in Fairhope. The closures will be at night from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday to Thursday. The completion is expected to be early spring.Officials do not anticipate any significant disruptions along the Baldwin/Foley Beach Express this summer, but a major repaving project is anticipated to begin this year.
