Man defrauded Apple with fake products, sentenced to 51 months, causing over $6M loss. Here are the details...
When it comes to customer satisfaction, Apple is undoubtedly one of the first brands that comes to mind. Speaking from personal experience, if you have a warranty for an Apple product and there is no problem caused by user error, the company will provide you with the best possible experience. This allows you to get your product repaired or even replaced with a new one at no cost within a short period. However, like any good system, there are people who exploit it.
Accomplices then returned these fakes to Apple stores claiming malfunctions. Apple’s warranty system, trusting the serial numbers, replaced the counterfeits with genuine iPhones and iPads. Liao’s group then sold these genuine devices at a high profit in China, resulting in losses exceeding $6 million for Apple.
Caught for leading this major scam, Liao received a 51-month prison sentence. Authorities seized assets including houses, cash, and over 200 Apple devices. While Apple suffered financial losses, the real impact of such scams could be felt by consumers. Companies might become more cautious in their customer service policies due to these fraudulent activities, potentially harming legitimate customers.
