A powerful earthquake rattled southwestern Japan, prompting a tsunami advisory. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the quake, which reached a magnitude of 6.9, off Miyazaki prefecture in the Kyushu region.
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan late on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, prompting local authorities to issue a tsunami advisory. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued the advisory for tsunami waves of up to one metre (nearly one yard) after the quake struck off Miyazaki prefecture in the Kyushu region around 21:19 pm (1219 GMT).
According to the JMA, areas experiencing the highest tremors included Miyazaki City, Takaharu Town, and Shintomi Town, all of which reported a level 5 weak intensity. Meanwhile, Kurume City in Fukuoka Prefecture recorded tremors at a level 4. Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes because of its location along the 'Ring of Fire', an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin
