A new Houston Chronicle database tracks firearm deaths among children in Harris County and around Houston, Texas.
The Chronicle has compiled photos and biographical details about each victim from interviews with family members and public online resources.
This database, which will continue to be updated, tracks firearm deaths among children in Houston and Harris County, a growing problem that has steadily increased over the past five years, according to data from the Institute of Forensic Sciences.Most of the victims died in gun homicides, according to the data, including shootings that authorities say were unintentional. Eleven children died by suicide. Those deaths are included in the tally but excluded from the map and list to protect privacy.
Each death leaves behind a gaping hole for the parents, siblings, friends, classmates and teachers who knew and loved the victims. Among the victims were young children who loved unicorns and playing outside and middle schoolers who brightened their homes with laughter and silliness. Most were teenagers – rebellious and reliable, sweet and smart – on the cusp of adulthood.Alvarez died from gunshot wounds in a homicide on Jan. 11. The 16-year-old Hispanic female was killed near a road.
