TCU and QB Josh Hoover worked around three turnovers to hand Kansas its fourth straight loss.
An early pass interference call on JaTravis Broughton following a TCU fumble led to Kansas’ first points of the game. It was WR Luke Grimm’s first receiving touchdown of the game with a 15-yard reception. When Kansas ended up in a 1st and 20 situation early in the third quarter, Broughton caught a holding penalty after QB Jalon Daniels was sacked by LB Cooper McDonald.
The unit looked unimproved, but had meaningful stops in the second half and shut down Kansas’ run game. In the first half, Kansas RBs averaged over six yards per carry, but the average was lowered to 4.9 yards per carry in the second. It’s nothing new that TCU’s main weakness is the run game on offense and defense. The offense can’t get it going and the defense can’t stop it.Although TCU has struggled with its run game, the Frogs put up 151 yards compared to Kansas’ 176.
Neal and Hishaw led the game in rushing, averaging 6.5 and 5 yards per carry, respectively. Both tallied a touchdown.Inefficient RB play has made the offense rely on Hoover who’s made costly mistakes in the past two games. The room showed improvement against Kansas’ defense with a new team leader: Jeremy Payne. The freshman has been in rotation with Dominique Johnson and Cam Cook since the first game and continues to have meaningful minutes.
Another week of fumbles and interceptions can rattle a young quarterback, but Hoover remained dominant despite the mistakes and kept his composure to bring TCU a much-needed win. Hoover passed for over 350 yards with three passing touchdowns. He completed 28 of 37 attempts., with a four-yard rush to give TCU a first down in the first quarter, and returned at the end of the fourth for two plays.
