Temple of Doom has long since been considered the darkest entry in the Indiana Jones series, and there are a number of reasons for this.

Temple of Doom has an infamous place in the Indiana Jones series since it’s much darker than its peers. There are a number of specific reasons for this, in conjunction with the lighter entries than come alongside it. The second entry does have its fun moments and isn’t all doom and gloom, but Temple of Doom is definitely less family-friendly than the other films in the Indiana Jones franchise.

Not only is Indiana Jones subjected to voodoo, he also almost kills Willy by lowering her down into a fiery pit, before Short Round wakes him up from his horrifying Thuggee cult spell. During an even more macabre sequence in the film, the ritualistic ceremony sees a man having his heart taken out of his chest, with the extracted heart visible in the hand of Mola Ram, during Temple of Doom's disturbing human sacrifice scene.

Another key element that makes Mola Ram so scary is that his plans involve children and child slavery. Any horror that revolves around children almost always becomes darker by definition, but this was a major departure for Indiana Jones as a series. The sight of children working in the Temple, as well as the bereft families before the adventure truly begins is as heartbreaking as it is horrifying.

Octopussy, the Bond film released just days before Temple of Doom, was also set in India and featured a very similar scene. Bond watches on as Kamal Khan eats an eyeball from the stuffed sheep head they are both served. Perhaps this was a coincidence, but Steven Spielberg had always wanted to direct a James Bond film, so maybe this was his way of getting as close to the 007 franchise as he could. However, unlike Bond, Temple of Doom placed added emphasis on horror, rather than campy charm.
