The 49ers are looking for options after last year’s breakout star, Elijah Mitchell, was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Now he joins the 49ers’ running back mix that includes likely starter Jeff Wilson Jr. and rookies Tyrion Davis-Price and Jordan Mason . Star receiver Deebo Samuel also lined up in the backfield in the Week 1 loss to Chicago, as he did frequently last season, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk saw some action as a third-down running back.
Mitchell officially hit the injured reserve Tuesday with the knee injury he suffered Sunday. He’ll be out for a minimum of four weeks. The 49ers added safety Tashaun Gipson to the active roster from the practice squad to take Mitchell’s roster spot. Gipson was activated for Sunday’s game and started the game, playing 57 snaps with Jimmie Ward on injured reserve.
