49ers have plenty to fix on offense despite one-sided win over Commanders

49ers’ explosive plays help mask an inefficient offense that failed to produce in red zone opportunities.

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers gather Monday after getting Christmas Day off, but it won’t be all good cheer coming from coach Kyle Shanahan.

“I was frustrated after the game, but our guys played pretty well too, so I had mixed emotions,” Shanahan said. “ proud of how all three phases played, but anytime you get the ball that much in the red zone and I think only have one touchdown to show for it, that was disappointing.” Part of the 49ers’ struggles owed itself to Washington being an above-average defensive team. That’s also what made the big plays so surprising.

Throw in a fourth-and-1 failure in the first quarter, and the 49ers had four red zone possessions where they got to the 15 or closer and got just nine points. Those four cases will be picked apart and critiqued in detail on Monday:
