49ers first depth chart offers intrigue at quarterback spot, of course

SANTA CLARA — Quarterback drama throughout 49ers training camp has carried over to their first depth chart, released Tuesday ahead of their preseason opener Sunday in Las Vegas.

Brock Purdy, who has taken all first-team reps in his 10 practices, is listed as the first-string quarterback, to no surprise, as he continues his comeback from March 10 elbow surgery. The race to be his backup, however, remains close. The 49ers, on the depth chart compiled by their communications department, list “Trey Lance — or — Sam Darnold” as the No. 2 quarterback. After them is Brandon Allen, who has been confined to third-team duty in camp.
