, Kyle Shanahan has surpassed second-year head coach Nick Sirianni as the favorite to win Coach of the Year.
Sirianni was the frontrunner for most of this season as the Eagles jumped out to an impressive 8-0 start, and even after the team suffered its first loss, his Birds were flying high as arguably the best in the league. Meanwhile, eight weeks into the Niners’ season, they managed to return to a .500 record at 4-4 with a huge win over a Rams team that would turn out to be a league bottom-feeder. Even as recently as Dec. 20, though, when the Niners were scorching hot, Sirianni was a heavy favorite.
Shanahan’s real test this season was when Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a broken foot and the Niners had to turn to an untested rookie, who was the last pick of the 2022 draft no less.
