Jeremy McNichols returns to the 49ers after two years as Derrick Henry’s backup in Tennessee.
The 49ers shuffled their roster Tuesday, swapping one offensive skill player for another.
They signed running back Jeremy McNichols and released tight end Troy Fumagalli ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Cardinals. McNichols played two games for the 49ers in his 2017 rookie season, but only appeared on special teams. He made two tackles — one solo — on 26 snaps as a Niner. He was drafted by Tampa Bay out of Boise State in 2017 and cut by the Bucs before Week 1, then quickly signed to the 49ers’ practice squad. San Francisco released him after the 2018 preseason.
The 27-year-old Long Beach native later joined the Colts and Jaguars before finally seeing significant action on offense with the Titans in 2020. Over 30 games across two seasons in Tennessee, he rushed 90 times for 364 yards. He also made 40 catches for 295 yards and scored one rushing and one receiving touchdown as the change-of-pace backup to bruiser Derrick Henry.
