Malaysian authorities conducted raids on 17 scam call centers in Kuchai Lama, detaining 46 foreigners and seizing evidence including laptops, mobile phones, and cash. The syndicate used social media and chat applications to lure victims, promising deals and then disappearing after receiving payments.
KUALA LUMPUR: Immigration authorities in Malaysia have conducted raids on 17 scam call centers located in Kuchai Lama, resulting in the detention of 46 foreigners. The operation took place at approximately 11:30 am on Wednesday, February 19th, targeting luxury condominiums housing the illicit call centers.
According to Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, the detained individuals comprised a diverse group: 14 male Chinese nationals, 15 men and four women from Indonesia, one man and two women from Myanmar, two Bangladeshi men, two women from Laos, and six Thai women.During the raids, authorities seized a significant amount of evidence, including four laptops, 88 mobile phones, 26 SIM cards, and a substantial sum of RM100,000 in cash. Zakaria revealed that the scammers had rented the units for their operations and utilized various online platforms, such as Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, and Telegram, to connect with and exploit potential victims. He further stated that the syndicate was suspected of operating a fraudulent online gambling operation. The modus operandi involved sending random offers for items to potential victims' mobile phones. When victims expressed interest, the scammers would request payment to be transferred to a designated account. Once the funds were sent, the victims would quickly discover that the seller had vanished, leaving them defrauded. Zakaria emphasized the seriousness of harboring undocumented foreigners and urged the public to refrain from doing so
