KUALA LUMPUR: The government arrested 418 civil servants for bribery last year, 140 of whom have since been charged, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hanipa Maidin was replying to Ikhmal Hisham Abdul Aziz , who asked the prime minister to state the number of civil servants arrested and charged for bribery last year. He also asked if there are plans to relocate civil servants after a certain period of time to prevent corruption.“The process of locating staff depends on vacancies at a place,” he added.In January, the government launched the National Anti-Corruption Plan as a warning to all – including the prime minister and Cabinet members – to steer clear of graft.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the fight against corruption would involve bringing offenders to book as well as ensuring that past mistakes are not repeated.
