Wheatley became the first black woman to publish a book in the U.S. when she released her collection of poems, calledAfter this debut, she was emancipated from slavery. She is credited for creating work that showed pride in her African roots and proved the intellectual capabilities of African Americans to slave owners.

Wheatley married a free black man, John Peters, in 1778, and passed from childbirth complications in 1784. The influential work she created during her life is remembered as a catalyst for the abolition movement.
