One piece of advice: Don't settle, however, always keep an open mind
will help with that.) Truly understanding your worth is powerful, but you need to be able to talk to others about it, too. And I know—this is easier said than done. The reality is, talking about ourselves is just plain hard.
That’s why you must practice. Craft some clear language explaining who you are and what you’re best at, and rehearse in front of a mirror. I recommend filming yourself and watching the videos to identify possible areas of improvement. Do this as often as you can before showing up to an interview, ideally until it feels comfortable and easy. Remember: You’ve worked hard to get to where you are in your career.
Start with your own network. Explain the types of positions you’re looking for and the characteristics of companies you’d want to work for. As you’ve very likely learned at this stage in your career, amazing opportunities can appear when you simply ask. Then, expand beyond your immediate circle. Try connecting with people you don’t know, too. Just make sure your message to them is clear, respectful, and has a simple ask.
If you’re still employed, you can think of your search as more of a side hustle. You can’t treat it like a full-time job, but it’s also a serious commitment that you’ll want to invest, at the very least, an hour or two in every day. I saved the most important for last. Both of these things are absolutely critical throughout this entire experience. First and foremost, your job search, especially right now, will probably be fraught with rejection. This isn’t a bad thing.
Use this time to really strengthen your confidence and mindset muscles. I often advise clients to create a mantra, like, “I believe in myself and know that I have tremendous value to offer to the right position,” and repeat it 100 times a day. When you find yourself listening to your own negative chatter, stop. Realize these are just thoughts you’re creating, and that you can choose to ignore and replace them.
