The National Party experienced significant electoral success, allowing them to establish a firm grip on power. Their main ideological points revolved around promoting unity and inclusivity in South African politics and society.
They capitalised on white fears and sought to promote Afrikaner nationalism and preserve white supremacy. Their platform promised to protect white interests and enforce strict racial segregation, which resonated with a significant portion of the white electorate. Additionally, the National Party addressed economic concerns and promised social and economic reforms. They tapped into the anxieties of the white electorate, and by offering solutions and portraying themselves as capable leaders, they won support from various groups, including farmers and labourers.and anti-British sentiment drove a wedge between them and Afrikaners.
The HNP’s platform of racial segregation and Afrikaner nationalism appealed to a growing sentiment among voters who were seeking alternatives to Smuts' leadership. The HNP and their alliance partner, the Afrikaner Party, had received a full eleven percent fewer votes than the UP, but due to a quirk in the first-past-the-post electoral system in use ended up with more seats.
Verwoerd is often referred to as the"Architect of Apartheid" due to his instrumental role in expanding and legally entrenching the system. Verwoerd shared the same ideology and goals as Malan, particularly in promoting Afrikaner nationalism and racial segregation, and his contributions to apartheid included developing theoretical justifications for the system and opposing any form of limited integration, known as baasskap.
