$21M worth of fentanyl pills seized from shipment of green beans at Otay Mesa crossing [Breaking]
More than 300 packages containing fentanyl pills — drugs with a street value of $21.1 million — were found inside a shipment of green beans and seized at the Otay Mesa border crossing Monday, according to federal officials.
The seizure took place around 7:20 p.m. when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer inspected a tractor trailer carrying the green beans, the agency said in a news release Tuesday. After the driver was directed to a secondary inspection, officers requested a canine team to screen the truck and trailer, the agency said. The dog alerted to drugs in the shipment.Officers found 308 concealed packages inside the trailer, federal authorities said. The drugs were identified as 3,520,000 fentanyl pills, weighing about 776 pounds.100 times more potentThe 48-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of narcotics smuggling, CBP officials said.
